Too young to stay in, too old to go out!
In 2018 Nigel began performing his show `Too young to stay in, too old to go out!'. It’s about ageing, which happens to us all. On the one hand there are daunting realities and cruel setbacks. On the other hand there is still pleasure to be had, unexpected victories and the chance to keep evolving. Through his original songs and stories, Nigel looks at dating, love, work, holidays - even the gym! There's lots of humour but with a bitter sweet edge. In 2019 he took the show to the Edinburgh Fringe. He has performed at various venues throughout the UK and is now touring the show.
Characters include:
- Raoul who breaks his hip and finds his soulmate.
- Gerald, whose date night begins in the gutter. Surely the only way is up?
- Rosie, relaxing with her knitting needles on a luxury cruise, when things take a very dark turn.
- A rich designer who can’t take his eyes off his hunky gardener. And then he has his cataracts removed.
There was an associated and occasional podcast with the same name. Nigel has spoken with lively people of a certain age, including Alison Steadman and Dillie Keane. You can find it on Spotify and other platforms
Still ticking!
One minute you pop into hospital for a routine procedure and the next minute someone slips and accidentally pierces your heart. Someone comes along to fix your heart and accidentally damages your lung. What a day! Well that happened to Nigel in 2021, but he lived to tell the tale and develop this show to celebrate his survival and his work, past and present.
This is a show which can vary depending on Nigel’s mood and his creativity, but at its heart – ah yes! – is the story of what happened in the operating theatre. Death appears in a mean pair of shades and tells all. Other songs and stories can be by a jaded rockstar, a vampire, a woman who has given up men and even an owl!
Overall, as the Reviews Hub stated, the show is ‘a paean to growing old disgracefully.’
Angel to vampire!
In 2016 Nigel took his show `Angel to Vampire!' to the Edinburgh Fringe, where he performed at the Space Triplex throughout August. In the show he takes a wry look at the yearnings in his life. He illustrates them with his original songs and stories Since then he has performed `Angel to vampire!' in various places including the St James Studio and the Buxton Fringe, where he was nominated for excellence for new writing.
Characters include:
- The man who hates being labelled, Nigel’s signature song.
- The Archangel Gabriel, who gives up his day job to join a jazz band in New Orleans.
- Prince Osnovski, a friendly Transylvanian vampire, who has his eye on a member of the audience.
- The hopeful lover who women only ever see as a friend.
